GetReal was started in 2018 by Auckland-based Jeff and Simona Turin. As a household with two working parents, for years, every school holiday was a two-week patchwork of camps, Minecraft classes, trampoline centres, sports and babysitting.
Jeff and Simona wanted to create a way to connect kids with their communities; introduce them to people who live differently than themselves; and show them that, even as kids, they can already make a real difference to other people.
GetReal is intended to provide young people with experiences that build the empathy, gratitude, awareness and self-esteem that can make positive community engagement and doing for others into lifelong habits.

In October, 2018, GetReal offered its first holiday programme through Selwyn Community Education at Selwyn College in Kohimarama, Auckland.
